Honouring the Merdeka Generation

Born between 1950 and 1959, the Merdeka Generation grew up during the tumultuous years of the 1950s and early 1960s. They steered the labour force in turbulent times, building a sturdy foundation. The men of the generation were among the earliest to serve National Service, while some of the women left school early to support their families.

Together with the Pioneer Generation, they have contributed greatly to Singapore during a time of struggle, hardship, and sacrifice.

You are eligible for the Merdeka Generation Package if you:
• Were born from 1 January 1950 to 31 December 1959; and
• Became a Singapore citizen on or before 31 December 1996.

The Merdeka Generation Package is also given to seniors who:
• Were born on or before 31 December 1949; and
• Became Singapore citizens on or before 31 December 1996; and
• Do not receive the Pioneer Generation Package.

If you are eligible, you will be notified by April 2019, and you will receive your Merdeka Generation Card from June 2019.

Merdeka Sayang

A Merdeka Story: The Soldier

A young man on the verge of NS enlistment is regaled by tales of courage and duty by his Merdeka Generation grandfather, who served in one of the first batches of National Service.

From Kampong Girl to Healthcare Hero

Nor Aini Hashim – the kampong girl turned nurse who toiled through our early healthcare system of understaffed clinics and overcrowded wards. Today, she mentors younger nurses.

The Merdeka Generation Package

The Merdeka Generation Package is introduced by the Government to honour and thank our Merdeka Generation for their contributions. They have shaped Singapore to the nation it is today.

The Merdeka Generation Package will benefit about 500,000 Singaporeans. It will support the Merdeka Generation in their silver years, as they age actively and purposefully.
